CHAPTER SEVEN
Maggie drove back home and waited for Brett to stop by. She had resorted to taking a hot shower to force the chill out of her bones and settled in on the couch with a mug of hot tea. Sheâd taken the notebook from the drawer in the kitchen and began a rough sketch of her thoughts about the house remodel.
After a few minutes, she turned the page and began a different diagram. She wrote Zach Pierceâs name in the middle of the page. She drew a circle around the name and wrote Paula Winchester over to the side. She circled it and drew a line back to Zachâs name. She stared at the page for a moment, then wrote âunknown victimâ at the bottom of the page with a question mark around it. Lastly, she wrote âbad guysâ under Paulaâs name and drew a line back to her.
âWhatâs this?â Brett asked her when he arrived. He picked up the notebook and took a seat next to her on the couch.
âI was just thinking through what I know about Zach and the things he said to me,â she told him. âI canât help but wonder if Paula was here to find him for these unnamed bad people who were the reason he changed his name.â
Brett nodded his head and smoothed the hair out of her face. âYou do realize that if thatâs true, itâs likely that Zach did kill her to prevent her from reporting back to them, whoever they might be, which means heâs guilty.â
Maggie nodded. âI wish you could find him.â She sighed. âI donât like the fact that he has made me the object of his attention.â
âI have a hard time with that as well, trust me,â Brett said. âYou told me on the phone that you think there might be something else wrong with him. What did you mean by that?â
âLike I told Ruby earlier, I think he has a hard time connecting information together,â she said. âFor example, when he talked to me about convincing you that heâs not responsible for Paulaâs death, he seems to think that just because he tells me that, you should believe it and just stop altogether. Itâs like he doesnât have the ability to reason things out.â
Brett nodded. âHe seems to be pretty clueless about how the justice system works.â
âDo you have any more information about the case in Kentucky?â
Brett shook his head. âNot yet,â he said. âI have a few calls out to some prosecutors Iâm familiar with in the state but havenât heard anything back from them yet.â
âI forgot to ask you about this, but how was Paula killed?â
âShe was strangled, Maggie,â he said. âAnd it had to have been by someone who was bigger and stronger than she was.â
âWhat makes you say that?â Maggie asked. She almost hated to hear the answer.
âBecause the marks on her neck indicated that someone was able to lift her off of her feet,â he said. âItâs very possible the assailant was in the back seat.
